Wildlife

Animals in Alaska

The animals have a very small window of opportunity to prepare themselves for the upcoming winter. You’ll see beaver working furiously to collect plants and stabilize their dams and lodges, a bear foraging on hundreds of thousands of berries and salmon to build up their fat reserves, or even an arctic ground squirrel scurrying around collecting nuts and fruit for their den. All day and night, these animals can be seen on an overland adventure. Sometimes they’ll even make an appearance at camp to check out what’s for dinner. If wildlife is something you get excited thinking about sitting in you recliner, then Alaska needs to be on your to do list!

Black Bear

We found this little fellow on the way up to Alaska just next to the Cassier Highway. It was Nat's first bear and she named him Jackson. There is also a big chance to spot black bears in Wrangell, Seward and Hope. Especially on our Exit Glacier Hike we have had a few bear encounters so far!

Brown Bear

Mama bear and her two cubs were walking just next to the bus in Denali NP! We couldn't believe our luck and had to actually zoom out with our lenses to get this picture. Brown Bears can also to be found on the Kenai Peninsula or alongside some of the roads we travel. If you want the ultimate Alaska Brown Bear experience think about adding on an extra day in Anchorage and fly over to Katmai.

Gray Whale

On our Seward wildife boat tour we were lucky and got this shot of a gray whale. There is also the chance to spot humpback whales, Orcas or Belugas. Every spring these giants return to Resurrection Bay from their winter calving grounds in Hawai and Mexico!

Moose

You won't miss a moose when you come to Alaska. They are all over the place but hard to get a picture of: they usually are very skittish and run off into the bushes! But you should not underestimate them. Especially a mother with her calve can get very dangerous for humans!

Sea Otter

An almost guaranteed animal sighting. Sea Otters are very common around the Kenai Peninsula and you will be able to spot them during our boat trip in Seward as well as on our kayak tour at the Adventure Camp.

Eagle

In most place of the world very rare to spot, not in Homer and Hope on the Kenai Peninsula. This fellow was waiting for some left over fish from the local fisher men!

Orca

On our wildlife cruise in Seward this August we spotted a pod of Orcas. Eight of these amazing creatures were popping up next to our boat!

Red Fox

The red fox is the largest of the foxes and can be found all over North America. This year they were hard to spot but as Denali is always great for wildlife sightings we finally found one! The picture was taken by our passenger Ulli from Germany!

Caribou

One of the more common sightings in Alaska is the Caribou. The only difference to a reindeer is that a caribou lives in the wild and reindeer are domesticated. This fellow crossed our way in Denali NP.

Dall Sheep

Yes, we have to admit, most of the time you only see them as white dots high up in the mountains, but one day this season we spotted them on the cliffs next to the Seward Highway on Turnagain Arm.

Beaver

Alaska's landscape is filled with thousands of beaver ponds. The trademark house of a beaver is seen alongside many of Alaska's roadways. And sometimes you are lucky to see the beaver busy refurbishing his home.

Stellar Sea Lion

Sea Lions are frequently spotted during our wildlife cruise and sea kayaking adventures even they are a protected species!
